Far too many organizations treat staffing project leaders like they treat grocery shopping. So long as a staffing company is providing them with a bevy of resumes with competitive prices and a good return policy, many organizations are content to shop there.
The problem is that, unlike with a gallon of milk, quality varies when shopping for project managers, and choosing the wrong product costs an organization’s time, dollars, morale, and efficiency. The impact of a poor hire is multiplied when it occurs at such a crucial position as a project manager.
In a world where 68% of all Information Technology (IT) projects fail, Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are accountable for one of the most challenging aspects of growing a business. Accordingly, CIOs have some of the shortest tenures among any executive position.

As we reach the midpoint of the decade it’s helpful to take a big-picture look at the state of Project and Portfolio Management. Project Assistants recently worked with a Professional Services client who had the unwieldy challenge of applying a methodology to 25+ solution offerings, involving 6,000+ engagements, 6+ languages, and thousands of delivery consultants dispersed over 54 countries and 4 continents. The client needed to improve its governance by building a better approach to develop, govern, and render their solution methods across the organization.
Our initial efforts to follow a traditional path for methodology development experienced significant challenges. It quickly became obvious that the typical methodology development approaches–Spreadsheets, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations–would not be practical. A much more effective solution for managing this amount of content was to develop a flexible, relational database solution that could collect, store, read, and render a methodology in the variety of formats that this type of information needs to be developed and distributed.
Agile methodologies have been hyped as the silver bullet for IT delivery solutions as it builds its track record for success in the world of increasingly customer-focused deliveries. But Agile is often seen as incompatible with project management. Traditional project management prescribes a defined budget, deadline, and scope starting points, whereas agile encourages a non-prescriptive, amendable approach to getting to an endpoint. But the two can, in fact, be brought together in a usable way.
